Pool Lighting Tips

After a long, hot day, there’s nothing better than taking a nighttime dip in the pool. Installing the right types of pool lighting can make swimming and entertaining after dark safer and more fun. It can also give your backyard a beautiful, resort-like look and feel.

There are so many different types of pool lighting options available, choosing the right combination can seem a bit overwhelming. These simple lighting ideas will help you get started.

1. Install Underwater Lights

Do not underestimate the importance of underwater lights. Not only will they draw attention to your pool, but since they highlight the pool’s walls and floor, they’re also critical for avoiding injuries. Underwater lighting can also add drama and character to your pool. Try experimenting with colored lights to create a unique and playful look.

2. Light Up Your Water Features

Waterfalls, grottos, bubblers, and other water features add depth and beauty to your pool area, but if they’re not lighted, they will disappear into the background after the sun goes down. Try adding lights to the underside of your waterfall or grotto to create an eye-catching look, or shine lights down onto the area where the water impacts the surface of the pool to draw attention to the movement.

3. Add Some Fire

If you want to add some drama to your pool area, there’s nothing quite like combining a dancing flame with a cool, still pool. From fire bowls to tiki torches, there are many different styles of fire features you can use to enhance your pool area. Not only will this give the entire space an upscale feel, but certain fire features can also add warmth to the patio, creating a cozy space for nighttime gatherings.

4. Install Safety Lighting

Pool lighting can do a lot for the overall ambiance of your backyard, but it’s also an important safety feature. Be sure to light up your pool patio so your guests don’t trip and fall. One of the best ways to accomplish this is to install in-ground lights in or around your patio. Not only does this create a chic look, but since everything is flush with the ground, you also won’t have to worry about guests tripping over your lighting.

Also be sure to light up your walkways, steps, and any other potentially hazardous changes in elevation. Strategically placed pathway lights can guide guests through the space without creating a “runway” look. You can also use LED strip lights or a combination of uplighting and downlighting to highlight stairs in a visually appealing way.

5. Don’t Forget Landscape Lighting

Lighting your pool is important, but if you really want to pull the design together, it’s also important to add some landscape lighting. Use this to highlight trees and shrubs, statues, or any other unique features you want to draw attention to. You can also experiment with different shades of lighting to create a more dramatic look. For example, lights with a pink or orange hue will create a tropical effect.
